HomeConfirm Your Registration

Verify the status of your voter registration

You'll save some stress if you verify the status of your registration each year before the end of the voter registration period.

Call the voter registrar’s office in the county where you live. The Hays County Elections Office (512-393-7310) is the official repository of voter records in this county.

While double-checking your status, you can make sure the name on record is the same (or substantially the same) as that on your Texas Drivers License or other photo I.D. If not, you should re-register.

OR, you can confirm your registration status on this website by going to Am I Registered? where you select one of three methods for conducting your search.

You can base your search on:
1. your Voter Unique Identifier (VUID), which appears on your voter registration certificate;
2. your Texas driver's license number, if you provided it when you applied for voter registration;
3. or, your first and last name.

Vote411.org will connect you with Am I Registered?.

Suspense

You can still vote if you are in Suspense status on or after October 11, 2022

● The clerk at the polls will ask you to fill out a Statement of Residence if you reside in the same county where you are registered.

● If you moved to a new county, you may vote a Limited Ballot during early voting at the main early voting location. A person entitled to vote a limited ballot may vote on all statewide races and any district offices that are in common between the former and new counties of residence. SOS Advisory on Limited Ballots

What is Suspense?  Suspense means that the registrar is not certain of your residential address.

•   The voter’s registration certificate has been returned as non-deliverable;
•   A Jury Summons is returned as non-deliverable; or
•   Any mailing that was sent to the voter was returned as non-deliverable.
•   The voter registrar has received information indicating the voter no longer lives at the address on the voter’s record.

In December of even-numbered years, a replacement voter registration certificate is mailed to the address on record. By law it may not be forwarded to a new address, but is returned to the Elections Office.

What if I am a naturalized citizen?

A number of citizens who have been naturalized have been notified that they do not seem to be citizens and will be purged from the voting rolls in 30 days unless they can prove that they are. Often that happens because they at one time had stated that they were not a citizen on some document. But now they are, and they may be required to prove that before being able to vote. To find out the status of your voter registration, go to VoteTexas.gov, go Am I Registered? and double-check your status. You should be able to provide documentation and be removed from the Suspense list. By being proactive, you should be restored to the voting roles.

I'm on the Suspense List, How Do I Get Off of It?

If you receive mail from the Hays County Elections Office asking you to confirm your address, complete it, mail it back to them, and they will take you off the suspense list. If you go to vote without returning the mailer (and therefore are still on the suspense list), you will just need to sign a “Statement of Residence” confirming your address when you check in to vote.

Can I Vote If I’m On The Suspense List?

Yes! When you arrive at the polls, just sign a “Statement of Residence” confirming your address when you check in to vote. Depending on whether you moved within the same county or between counties since the last time you updated your voter registration, you may have to vote during Early Voting only, at the county’s main voting polling place only, or with a Limited Ballot only. To double check, call the Hays County Election Office (512-393-7310) before heading out to vote.

Suspensions happen all the time but are easy to fix, so don’t worry if you find out you’re on the list. Just correct your information and then cast that ballot!

Moving? Avoid Getting on the Suspense List

Update your registration by filling out a new voter registration application. If you’re moving to a new county, check “New Application” at the top of the form. If you’re moving within the same county, check “Change of Address, Name, or Other Information” at the top of the form.

Or Update Online (see details here, scroll down to see).
